[Asia Economy Reporter Jonggil Lee] As the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) continues, the Korean Library Association proposed on the 25th to the government and local governments, which operate public libraries, to postpone the opening of libraries. In a statement released that day, the association said, "This is a time when physical distancing must be maintained," and emphasized, "Forcing libraries to open is directly against the safety of the public." It added, "Now is the time to expand non-face-to-face services through online means rather than face-to-face services," and called for the distribution of e-books, the establishment of online service platforms, and the provision of quarantine equipment. The association also stressed the need for compensation and support measures for irregular instructors who lost their jobs due to library closures. Furthermore, it stated, "Once COVID-19 ends, librarians and libraries will strive to provide better services." The Korean Library Association is an organization established to promote libraries, exchange materials, conduct research on cooperation and operation, improve staff qualifications, and enhance common interests.
