[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Yeon-ju] Rapper Simba Jawadi expressed his thoughts on the 'Telegram Nth Room Incident.'
On the 22nd, Simba Jawadi mentioned the 'Nth Room Incident' on his Instagram account, saying, "At times like this, I hope punishment is carried out with calm reason rather than emotion."
After receiving criticism from some netizens, he stated, "This case has sparked public outrage and become a major issue, but does that mean we can ignore previous precedents and fairness and sentence everyone to life imprisonment or the death penalty based on the public's heated emotions?" He also claimed, "The number of 260,000 people involved was excessively inflated as if that many people paid money and participated in sexual exploitation crimes, based on unfounded 'simple aggregation.'"
He added, "This is not just about applying to the Doctor's Room or Nth Room right now, but in the future, if your son or younger sibling watches adult videos somewhere by mistake, this case will become a precedent, and considering fairness, society might sentence them to life imprisonment or the death penalty. This is a serious issue beyond just asking for harsher punishment because it makes me upset."
He continued, "If false accusations keep piling up, in the future, society might not regard sex offenders as serious criminals but as people who were just unlucky to get caught."
Simba Jawadi said, "However, what I think is problematic is that when looking at the basis for the claim of 260,000 people, it inevitably shows the forces trying to turn this into a gender conflict issue," arguing that the incident has escalated into a gender conflict problem.
Some netizens strongly criticized Simba Jawadi's remarks.
Netizens poured out their anger toward the Telegram Nth Room and criticism toward Simba Jawadi, saying things like, "Do you think this happened just because someone watched an adult video by mistake?", "How can you reduce the Nth Room's minor sexual exploitation case to a gender fight?", and "It's strange that you're worried about your younger brother accidentally watching Nth Room videos and getting caught, rather than worrying about women around you getting involved in the same thing someday."
Meanwhile, the 'Telegram Nth Room Incident' involved creating secret rooms on the messenger Telegram to share illegal footage and sexually exploit women. On the 19th, Judge Won Jeong-sook of the Seoul Central District Court, responsible for warrants, issued an arrest warrant for Jo, a man in his 20s nicknamed 'Doctor,' a key figure in the case, on charges of violating the Act on the Protection of Children and Juveniles from Sexual Abuse (production and distribution of obscene materials, etc.).
A Blue House petition demanding the disclosure of the identities of all 'Nth Room' subscribers had gained over 2.14 million supporters as of 7 a.m. on the 23rd.
