[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] The Ministry of Education announced on the 18th that a total of 24 districts have been selected for the High School Credit System Pilot District Operation Support Project, and 8 provinces have been chosen as targets for the educationally underserved area condition improvement project.
The High School Credit System, promoted as one of the measures to resolve high school hierarchy and strengthen the educational capacity of general high schools announced last November, is a system where students complete courses at various types of schools and institutions within the region and are recognized for graduation once their accumulated credits reach the required standard.
The 24 pilot districts selected will receive support ranging from approximately 100 million to 800 million KRW per district, and the 8 underserved provinces will receive up to 2 billion KRW per education office for condition improvement. Through this, projects to improve educational conditions will also be promoted to expand learning choices for students in educationally underserved areas such as farming, mountainous, and fishing villages where offering various courses is difficult.
Lee Sang-su, Director of the Curriculum Policy Division at the Ministry of Education, stated, "We will establish the operational foundation for the High School Credit System in all general high schools, including educationally underserved areas, before the full implementation of the credit system in 2025."
