In the UK, It Has Established Itself as the Highest-Grossing Foreign Language Film
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jong-gil] The Japanese cumulative sales of the movie Parasite have exceeded 4 billion yen (approximately 46.9 billion KRW). According to CJ ENM on the 9th, the film earned 4,047.16 million yen (approximately 47.4 billion KRW) in Japan as of the 8th. It has become the highest-grossing Korean film ever in Japan. The previous record was 3 billion yen (approximately 35.2 billion KRW) for A Moment to Remember (2005).
The fever for Parasite shows no signs of cooling. Until last month, it led the box office for three consecutive weeks, and it performed well again last weekend (7th-8th), ranking third. It was released nationwide in Japan on January 10th, starting at fifth place, but began gaining word of mouth after winning four awards at the American Academy Awards.
The film has also established itself as the highest-grossing foreign-language film in the UK. Released on the 7th of last month, it recorded cumulative sales of ?11,088,149 (approximately 17.4 billion KRW) as of the 6th. The previous highest-grossing film was The Passion of the Christ (2004) with ?11,078,861.
Parasite is also thriving in North America, earning $52.81 million (approximately 63.5 billion KRW). Only three films have earned more: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000, $128.1 million), Life is Beautiful (1997, $57.2 million), and Hero (2002, $53.7 million).
The estimated total revenue Parasite has earned worldwide to date is $245.9 million (approximately 295.8 billion KRW).
