Automatic Enrollment for Nowon-gu Residents, Coverage Period from March 1 for One Year - Bicycle Insurance Benefits Available Nationwide for Accidents... Compensation from 300,000 KRW Consolation to 30 Million KRW Support... 1,480 People Received 1.06 Billion KRW in Compensation from 2015 to 2019
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) has enrolled all residents in ‘bicycle insurance’ to prepare for bicycle safety accidents among local residents.
Bicycle insurance automatically covers all residents registered in the district without any enrollment procedures. Insurance benefits can be received regardless of where the accident occurs nationwide. Even those who do not reside in Nowon-gu but rent bicycles from Nowon-gu public bicycle rental stations are eligible for insurance benefits.
The coverage period for the bicycle insurance is one year, until February 28, 2021.
The coverage includes ▲ accidents occurring while riding (driving) a bicycle ▲ damages caused by collisions with a moving bicycle. If the insured suffers death or permanent disability due to a bicycle accident, coverage is provided up to 10 million KRW. For diagnoses requiring treatment of 4 weeks or more, a diagnosis allowance ranging from 300,000 KRW (4 weeks) to 700,000 KRW (8 weeks) is provided.
If a resident is fined due to a bicycle accident, coverage is provided up to 20 million KRW. In cases where the insured must reach a criminal settlement for causing death or serious injury to others (excluding family members, including passengers), coverage is provided up to 30 million KRW. Legal fees for hiring a lawyer are also supported up to 2 million KRW.
For users of Nowon-gu bicycle rental stations who are hospitalized due to bicycle traffic accidents, a hospitalization consolation payment of 15,000 KRW per day (up to 180 days) is provided. In cases of damage or theft of public bicycles, compensation of up to 100,000 KRW per bicycle is available.
Insurance claims can be submitted by the insured or legal heirs by attaching relevant supporting documents to the insurance claim form and submitting it to the insurance company.
The district has been enrolling residents in bicycle insurance since 2015 to ensure they can enjoy cycling with peace of mind. Until last year, insurance payments totaling 1.06 billion KRW were made to 1,480 residents who experienced bicycle accidents.
Additionally, since July last year, the district has enrolled residents in ‘Resident Safety Insurance’ to provide compensation for damages caused by natural disasters and social disasters. This safety insurance is a system where the insurance company contracted with the district office pays insurance benefits when Nowon-gu residents suffer various accidents, with compensation up to 10 million KRW per person. Like the bicycle insurance, residents registered in Nowon-gu are automatically enrolled without separate procedures.
Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “We will continue efforts to create an environment where bicycles can be ridden safely,” adding, “By spreading a bicycle culture that helps save transportation costs, protect the environment, and promote health, we will build Nowon into a 100-year healthy city.”
