Seongbuk-dong Residents Contribute Materials and Sewing Skills... A Model for Overcoming the Era of Resident Autonomy... District Mayor Lee Seung-ro Supports Linkage with Bomun-dong Fashion Sewing Center
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Lee Seung-ro, the mayor of Seongbuk-gu, participated in the "Cotton Mask Making" activity with members of the Seongbuk-dong Residents' Autonomy Committee at the Seongbuk-dong Community Center on the afternoon of the 6th.
Due to the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic, masks have become difficult to obtain, and prices have soared, causing difficulties in mask supply for vulnerable groups including basic livelihood security recipients. In response, Seongbuk-dong residents rolled up their sleeves to help directly.
The Seongbuk-dong Residents' Autonomy Committee took the lead first to assist neighbors in need, followed by participation from Seongbuk-gu Office, the community center, and volunteer residents.
Since the 4th, a mask workshop was set up in the multipurpose room of the Seongbuk-dong Community Center, and on the third day, the 6th, 300 cotton masks made with the residents' dedication were completed.
From sewing talent donations to procurement of materials such as fabric and sewing machines, as well as manpower organization, the entire process was led by Seongbuk-dong residents, demonstrating how the community overcomes difficulties in the era of residents' autonomy.
In particular, on the 6th, Mayor Lee Seung-ro also made cotton masks with the residents and helped by linking with the Fashion Sewing Center, which has fabric processing machines, to provide some assistance to the residents.
As production efficiency increased, the initial expected quantity was 300 masks, but through cooperation with the center, an additional 1,500 masks are planned to be produced.
Kim Yuk-young, chairman of the Seongbuk-dong Residents' Autonomy Committee, said on the day, "Seeing everyone step forward wholeheartedly to help neighbors, I was able to confirm the capabilities of our residents. We want to continue building a Seongbuk-dong that acts for neighbors in need like today."
Mayor Lee Seung-ro, who participated in the mask making, said, "Everyone is making efforts due to COVID-19, but there are many difficulties. I am especially grateful that residents, including the Residents' Autonomy Committee, have accomplished this meaningful work together with the district office and community center. I thank all those who have worked together from small tasks."
Seongbuk-dong plans to deliver the cotton masks made this time to low-income vulnerable groups in Seongbuk-dong and announced that they will continue to produce and supply masks regularly in the future.
