[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] Daegu City has expressed its intention to refuse the 10 billion KRW donation made by Shincheonji Jesus Church to the Community Chest of Korea in Daegu.
On the 6th, Daegu Mayor Kwon Young-jin stated at a regular briefing, "Yesterday, Shincheonji announced that it donated 10 billion KRW to the Community Chest of Korea in Daegu, but Daegu City and the Community Chest of Korea Daegu Branch have rejected this donation," adding, "What Shincheonji must do is not donation. Chairman Lee Man-hee, along with the Shincheonji leadership and members, must actively cooperate with quarantine efforts."
Mayor Kwon said, "I earnestly request and warn Shincheonji," and urged, "Shincheonji members should actively comply with admission to residential treatment centers (isolation treatment facilities for mild patients)." He added, "Many social resources are being wasted and the public is anxious," emphasizing, "Those who are to be treated at the treatment centers have the obligation to be admitted even if it is inconvenient. Refusing or delaying admission to residential treatment centers for other reasons is unacceptable."
He continued, "Despite the self-quarantine period being extended by five days, there are still members who intentionally refuse diagnostic tests," and stated, "This is causing significant confusion and disruption to quarantine measures."
Shincheonji said the previous day, "The donation will be used for disaster relief activities and support for relief supplies in Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions, which are struggling due to the spread of COVID-19, as well as nationwide." The donation was deposited at once: 10 billion KRW to the Community Chest of Korea Daegu Branch and 2 billion KRW to the central organization.
