'Social Distancing' Means People Keeping Distance from Each Other by Refraining from Unnecessary Outings and Gatherings
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] The COVID-19 situation is severe not only in our country but worldwide. Even after more than a month, the momentum of COVID-19 shows no signs of slowing down.
Experts say the critical period is up to two weeks. Medical staff in charge of quarantine describe the current situation as "like a heavy snowfall forcing everyone to stay at home."
To prevent the spread of the virus, it is most important to minimize going out and interpersonal contact as much as possible.
Jungnang-gu (District Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) has initiated ‘social distancing.’
‘Social distancing’ means refraining from unnecessary outings and gatherings to keep distance between people.
The district first rearranged the layout of the underground cafeteria at the district office, which is most frequently used by employees. Originally arranged so people could face each other while eating and talking, the seating was changed to face one direction to maintain distance between employees.
In addition, the use of 10 recreational facilities that employees use for leisure has been postponed from March to April.
A staggered working hours system is also being implemented. Some Jungnang-gu employees participate in staggered hours by starting work at 10 a.m. and leaving at 7 p.m. to support ‘social distancing.’
Along with this, 52 various events where many people gather have been canceled or postponed, and 590 public facilities such as senior centers have been temporarily closed to actively enforce social distancing measures against the COVID-19 virus.
Jungnang-gu is concerned that social distancing might also create emotional distance, so it plans to strengthen psychological solidarity through enhanced communication on social media.
Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, stated, “Jungnang-gu is responding to COVID-19 with the united effort of all employees and residents. Along with quarantine measures, we will also carry out psychological quarantine to protect both the physical and mental safety of our residents.”
