As CJ Hello was acquired by LG Uplus, the company name was changed to ‘LG HelloVision.’ Along with this, full-scale investment in the wired business has been underway since earlier this year. LG Uplus is investing 2.6 trillion KRW over five years in content production and procurement, as well as in the development of wired and wireless convergence technologies, while LG HelloVision is allocating 620 billion KRW to its own network. More than 190 billion KRW will be invested in regional channel budgets over five years.
CJ Hello, which previously operated as a regional cable internet provider with limited installation areas and faced many complaints about internet speed and quality degradation, has revealed that it will focus intensively on the wired business following its acquisition by LG Uplus and the subsequent name change.
Since the 18th, LG HelloVision has been using the LG Uplus network to expand coverage and improve the quality of internet and IPTV services. Therefore, areas that previously could only install internet speeds up to 160M are expected to be able to install internet lines exceeding 500M.
Additionally, LG HelloVision plans to enhance broadcast service quality by improving cable TV picture quality and expanding the number of channels, and will also add the popular kids’ content ‘Idleulnara,’ which was previously only available on LG Uplus, to ‘Hello TV.’
LG HelloVision is popular among consumers who want to save money, as its monthly fees are cheaper compared to the three major telecom companies.
Currently, the three major telecom companies charge 33,000 KRW per month for a standalone 500M internet plan, whereas LG HelloVision offers it for 25,410 KRW. For combined internet 500M + IPTV plans, monthly charges vary depending on the TV plan, but LG HelloVision is about 10,000 KRW cheaper per month.
As a result, LG HelloVision has a relatively high subscription rate among younger age groups. In particular, online internet comparison sites are popular because they offer additional gifts averaging over 100,000 KRW compared to customer centers.
Among internet comparison sites, ‘Penguin Tongsin’ is well known, and since the prize notification system was implemented in June 2019, it has been praised by netizens for providing the maximum guided gifts and cash gifts on the day of installation.
Considering that most internet comparison sites take about a week to provide gifts after installation, the support of cash gifts on the day of installation can be seen as an exceptional benefit from the consumer’s perspective.
