[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] As the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) in China shows signs of easing, the number of provinces (including municipalities and autonomous regions) that have downgraded their COVID-19 response levels has increased to 13.
According to major foreign media on the 26th, Qinghai Province downgraded its response level from Level 1 to Level 3 for major sudden public health incidents, and several other regions also lowered their response levels. Sichuan Province and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region lowered their response levels from Level 1 to Level 2 starting today.
The regions that have downgraded their response levels number 13 out of the 31 provinces nationwide. Since the end of last month, China has maintained a Level 1 response to major sudden public health incidents across all regions in relation to the spread of COVID-19.
Six regions including Guangdong Province, Shanxi Province, and Jiangsu Province lowered their response levels to Level 2, while seven regions including Liaoning Province and Yunnan Province lowered their response levels by two levels to Level 3.
Earlier, at a meeting on the 22nd, President Xi Jinping mentioned that production should be resumed step-by-step by dividing regions according to their levels.
Meanwhile, the Chinese Ministry of Culture and Tourism announced guidelines on the same day stating that high-risk tourist areas will remain closed for the time being, while low-risk and medium-risk areas will have their reopening decisions made by the respective local governments.
