Issuance of Safety Number (QR) for Returned License Plate Motorcycles to Prevent Theft, Improve Street Environment, Protect Private Property, Enable Quick Owner Verification, and Avoid Forced Scrapping
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol) has become the first in the nation to issue a safety number (QR) to motorcycles that return their license plates, in order to manage motorcycles without license plates whose owners are difficult to identify.
Motorcycle owners return their license plates when registering the disposal of unused motorcycles, and about 4,000 cases are reported and processed annually in Dongdaemun-gu alone.
Motorcycles without license plates are vulnerable to crimes such as theft and are indiscriminately abandoned in inappropriate places, damaging the surrounding environment. As a result, this often leads to forced scrapping, causing financial losses.
Accordingly, the district has established a system that allows easy identification of owners of motorcycles without license plates by issuing a safety number (QR) to motorcycle owners who return their license plates and attaching it to the respective motorcycles. This is expected to greatly contribute to solving issues related to theft and other crimes, street environment problems, and the protection of private property.
Yoo Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “We have established the nation’s first safety number (QR) provision system to ensure that no motorcycles go unmanaged due to license plate returns,” and added, “We will continue to introduce innovative ideas into policies to ensure that residents do not experience any inconvenience in their daily lives.”
