Shall We Become Urban Farmers?… Yeongdeungpo-gu Offers Free Garden Plots to 300 People

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Chae Hyun-il) is leasing 3,680㎡ of community garden plots within the public open space in Mullae-dong to 300 residents, providing an opportunity to cultivate garden plots for free in the urban area.

The garden plots located in Mullae-dong (Mullae-dong 3-ga 55-6) have been used as a space where residents can grow and harvest healthy food themselves and appreciate the value of nature.

In particular, the ‘2020 Mullae-dong Public Open Space Urban Garden’ promotes eco-friendly urban agriculture using the ‘3-No Farming Method’ which prohibits the use of pesticides, plastic sheets, and chemical vinyl.

This year, a total of 300 households will be allocated garden plots of approximately 6㎡ per household, allowing them to freely cultivate crops.

The garden plots will be open from April 1 to November 30, with free access from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. between April and September, and from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in October and November. The garden will be closed during Chuseok and in case of natural disasters.

Next to the garden plots, a 530㎡ cotton field and shaded rest areas have been created, expected to serve as a healing space for residents.

Any resident of the district can apply for the free urban garden plots. Interested households can submit an application form via email (dabin017@ydp.go.kr) from February 26 to March 4 by 6 p.m. Compost and seedlings are self-funded.

The application form can be found on the district website (www.ydp.go.kr) under the Notices and Announcements board. For inquiries, contact the Job and Economy Division at ☎2670-3420.

Applications can also be submitted in person at the Job and Economy Division, but email submission is recommended to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The district will select winners through a random computerized draw on March 6, and the list of selected applicants will be posted on the district website on March 10, along with individual notifications.

Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “The Mullae-dong urban garden has been loved by residents for many years as a healing place in the city. We hope everyone creates precious memories by touching the soil and growing eco-friendly food in the urban area.”
