[Asia Economy Reporter Minwoo Lee] South Korean passengers visiting Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province, China, were subjected to mandatory quarantine measures. Local governments are also strengthening quarantine measures to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).

On the afternoon of the 25th, about 40 South Korean nationals who traveled from Incheon Airport to Nanjing Airport on Asiana Airlines flight OZ349 were quarantined at a hotel designated by Chinese authorities. Chinese quarantine officials isolated passengers seated near three Chinese nationals on the flight who showed fever symptoms, regardless of nationality, at a designated facility.

The Korean Embassy in China initially reported that Chinese authorities intended to quarantine all passengers, but through negotiations with the airline, 70 passengers seated within three rows in front of and behind the febrile individuals were quarantined. Among them, about 40 were South Korean nationals, including approximately five infants and children. Local quarantine authorities notified the quarantined individuals that they may be required to stay at the designated hotel for up to 14 days.
