Professor Kim Seok-mo of Hwasun Jeonnam National University Hospital Appointed Director of 'Gwangju-Jeonnam Regional Cancer Center'

"We Will Fulfill Our Role in Cancer Prevention, Treatment, and Management Institutions"

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Hwasun Chonnam National University Hospital announced on the 25th that Professor Kim Seokmo (Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology) has recently been appointed as the director of the nationally designated 'Gwangju-Jeonnam Regional Cancer Center.'

Professor Park Wonju (Department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine) has been appointed as the head of the Cancer Management Division within the center.

The Gwangju-Jeonnam Regional Cancer Center had been operating as the 'Jeonnam Regional Cancer Center' until it was integrated and launched at the end of last year.

The newly appointed director Kim is known as an expert in gynecologic tumors such as cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, and ovarian cancer.

He was also introduced nationwide through the EBS medical documentary program 'Myung-ui' in February 2018.

He previously served as the director of the Jeonnam Regional Cancer Center for two years starting in March 2014.

Meanwhile, the Jeonnam Regional Cancer Center was nationally designated in 2004 and officially opened in 2007.

In 2008, it was designated as a hospice palliative care specialized institution, and has led national cancer conquest projects such as being designated as the Jeonnam Smoking Cessation Support Center in 2015, selected as the executing institution for the Gwangju-Jeonnam Regional Cancer Survivors Integrated Support Center in 2017, and designated as the Gwangju-Jeonnam-Jeju Regional Hospice Center last year.

It was also selected as an excellent regional cancer center by the Ministry of Health and Welfare evaluation last year.

Director Kim said, “In line with the integrated launch of the Gwangju-Jeonnam Cancer Center, we will further expand prevention, management, treatment, and research services for regional cancer patients,” adding, “We will strive to fulfill our role as a cancer prevention, treatment, and management institution as well as establish a community cancer management system.”
