Suncheon City Provides Medicine and Equipment, Model Drivers' Association Joins Forces Through Volunteer Work
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] Amid concerns over the nationwide spread of COVID-19, Suncheon City has begun disinfecting taxis, one of the public transportation modes, to ensure the safety of its citizens.
On the 24th, Suncheon City in Jeollanam-do announced that, with the cooperation of the Model Drivers Association (President Han Byungseok), it is disinfecting taxis so that citizens can use taxis with peace of mind amid the COVID-19 situation.
Due to their nature, taxis are used by dozens of unspecified passengers, and since passengers and drivers share the same air in a confined space, taxis are vulnerable to transmission.
Suncheon City and the Model Drivers Association agreed to first carry out vehicle disinfection to eliminate anxiety factors for passengers and drivers and to block sources of COVID-19 contamination.
The disinfection is conducted at the Suncheon Station taxi stand, where taxis usually gather in large numbers. The city provides chemicals and equipment support, and the Model Drivers Association carries out the disinfection through volunteer efforts of its members, making it a public-private cooperation that has been ongoing since the 20th.
A Suncheon City official stated, “We will continue disinfection with the cooperation of the Model Drivers Association until the situation is resolved,” and urged local taxis to visit the Suncheon Station stand at least twice a day to receive disinfection and operate their services.
