Based on the Records of Dancer Choi Seunghee, Nam Hwayeon Solo Exhibition 'Flow of the Mind'

[Asia Economy Reporter Byunghee Park] Art Sonje Center will hold a solo exhibition by Nam Hwayeon titled "Flow of the Mind" from the 28th to April 26th.

This exhibition is based on the artist's research on dancer Choi Seunghee (1911?1969), which she has been conducting since 2012, and the journey of thoughts that followed.

In 2012, Nam Hwayeon traced the life trajectory of Choi Seunghee through the performance "Garden of Italy (2012)." At that time, Nam minimized Choi Seunghee's personal history and typical images to reinterpret her anew.

Choi Seunghee was a dancer born during the Japanese colonial period who went to Japan at the age of sixteen to study under modern dancer Ishii Baku and later explored Korean traditional dance and Eastern dance. Her dance and path embody the artist's concerns about subjectivity and the era's conflicts standing between Joseon and Japan, tradition and modernity, East and West. After liberation, she defected to the North with her husband An Mak, leaving very limited materials about her in South Korea.

Nam Hwayeon has been working on Choi Seunghee by imagining a single path over these fragmented records and images.

Conceptually connected to "Garden of Italy," this exhibition presents the accumulated materials on Choi Seunghee while weaving together the works and archives Nam has built over the years through Choi Seunghee. Based on Choi Seunghee's records, videos interpreting her various choreographic works in diverse formats will be showcased. Additionally, Nam Hwayeon plans to perform daily for two weeks during the exhibition period. Through choreography, Nam has focused on the effects occurring when time penetrates the body and has contemplated ways to visualize the resulting waves.

The exhibition title "Flow of the Mind" is taken from Choi Seunghee's choreography of the same name. In 2014, the artist created a performative work composed of drawings, sound, and posters imagining the dance's movement based on two remaining photos and a brief critic's review of the performance. This exhibition will present "Flow of the Mind (2020)" as an installation including light and sound, changing its scale and form.
