According to local Israeli media such as The Times of Israel, on the evening of the 22nd (local time), the Israeli government banned the entry of Korean tourists due to concerns about the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection. The Israeli Ministry of Health stated that this decision was made as the number of COVID-19 cases in Korea has recently surged.
The Israeli government is expected to cancel flights from Korea to Israel until further notice. This measure by the Israeli government came after it was confirmed that Koreans who participated in a pilgrimage to Israel were infected with COVID-19.
Earlier that day, Korea’s Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that among 77 people from Gyeongbuk and Jeju who recently went on a pilgrimage to Israel, 18 were confirmed positive for COVID-19. The Israeli Ministry of Health also stated that 30 Israeli students who had contact with the Korean pilgrimage group have been quarantined and will undergo COVID-19 testing.
