[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] A confirmed case of COVID-19 has occurred at Samsung Electronics' Gumi plant, leading to the closure of the facility and the implementation of disinfection measures.
Samsung Electronics' COVID-19 Emergency Response Task Force (TF) sent an "urgent notice" text message to employees on the 22nd, stating, "Due to a confirmed case at Samsung Electronics' Gumi plant this morning, the company has decided to close the Gumi plant until the morning of the 24th, and disinfection is currently being carried out throughout the entire facility."
The COVID-19 Emergency Response TF urged employees, "Please refrain from personal outings as well as using or attending multi-person facilities during Saturday and Sunday," and added, "Furthermore, to prevent personal infection, please be sure to wear a mask individually when coming to work on Monday."
The COVID-19 Emergency Response TF plans to provide additional information regarding other confirmed cases in Gumi and commuting routes as soon as they are confirmed.
Several employees belonging to Samsung Electronics' Gumi plant reported, "As soon as the news of the confirmed case was announced, all employees working weekend overtime were forcibly sent home, and the building was closed for disinfection."
The Gumi city government announced on the same day, "A confirmed COVID-19 case has occurred," adding, "The confirmed patient is a 28-year-old woman residing in Sandong-myeon and an employee of a major corporation's wireless division in the Gumi National Industrial Complex." Jang Seyong, the mayor of Gumi, also posted on social media that "It has been confirmed that the confirmed patient met with her boyfriend, who attended the Shincheonji Church gatherings on the 9th and 16th. She is currently quarantined at home."
