[Asia Economy Reporter Shinwon Yoon] Former Liberty Korea Party lawmaker Cha Myung-jin criticized Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon and Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung's decision to close the Shincheonji Church of Jesus (Shincheonji) to prevent the community spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), calling it "dictatorship and religious persecution."
On the 21st, former lawmaker Cha said on his Facebook, "Shincheonji is a heresy," but added, "Still, we should not blame the outbreak of COVID-19 on Shincheonji."
He stated, "They are blaming Shincheonji for worshipping too closely together and for Shincheonji patients arrogantly refusing tests and wandering around," and claimed, "This is a manipulation of public opinion by Moon Jae-in's faction, who worship Chinese President Xi Jinping's dictatorship and lifted quarantine measures themselves to evade responsibility."
He continued, "Logically, would the 31st patient have acted that way knowing they were infected?" and added, "Isn't the problem the authorities who loosened quarantine measures?"
Former lawmaker Cha also criticized, "Park Won-soon and Lee Jae-myung are even closing Shincheonji churches. This is dictatorship. This is religious persecution," calling it "a witch hunt that shifts their own guilt onto others."
He further pointed out, "What is regrettable is that even among the free right-wing and Christians, there are cheers to take down the heretical Shincheonji at this opportunity," and emphasized, "Above all, oppressing others with violence just because their religion is different is not liberalism."
