Jeonnam Province Provides Supplies to Daegu and Gyeongbuk Amid 'COVID-19 Spread Crisis'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province announced on the 20th that it has provided supplies to the Daegu and Gyeongbuk regions, which are struggling with a large number of COVID-19 confirmed cases, to help them quickly regain stability.

The supplies provided by the province include 40,000 masks, 600 hand sanitizers, and local specialty products that boost immunity (Boseong green tea, Gwangyang maesil plums, Muan onions, seaweed noodles, and domestic wheat ramen).

Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok held a COVID-19 community transmission prevention response meeting with 22 mayors and county heads and provincial department heads in attendance, focusing on the progress and measures by sector and the response plans of cities and counties in relation to the confirmed COVID-19 cases in Daegu and Gyeongbuk.

Considering the seriousness of the situation, with 48 confirmed cases emerging in Daegu and Gyeongbuk since the previous day and the increased possibility of community transmission, the progress in each sector such as quarantine, inbound traveler management, child care, and firefighting was thoroughly checked.

Governor Kim said, “The current situation is a nationwide emergency not limited to Daegu and Gyeongbuk, causing much concern among the public,” and urged, “All cities and counties must unite and put all efforts into blocking and quarantining to ensure that no COVID-19 cases occur in our province.”

He continued, “To prevent local transmission, patients must be identified quickly, government guidelines must be followed, and measures stronger than the government’s actions should be implemented,” adding, “If symptoms such as fever or cough appear, residents should be guided to immediately consult with health centers and get tested at screening clinics.”

He also emphasized, “Until the situation calms down, events with large gatherings should be refrained from, and disinfection must be significantly strengthened at facilities protecting vulnerable groups and multi-use facilities,” and stressed, “Medical personnel and facility readiness should be thoroughly checked in advance, and separate isolation facilities should be secured by cities and counties in preparation for cluster outbreaks.”

In addition, Jeonnam Province decided to focus all efforts on rapid execution of local finances (9.1426 trillion won in the first half of the year) through cooperation among cities and counties to prevent the local economy from stagnating due to the COVID-19 crisis.

Meanwhile, on the same day, Mokpo Mayor Kim Jong-sik reported on the city’s infection response status and plans to conduct a joint simulation drill involving general hospitals, medical centers, and health centers to prepare for actual COVID-19 cases. Yeosu Mayor Kwon Oh-bong reported on the early payment plan for farmers’ and fishermen’s public benefit allowances related to the rapid execution of local finances in the first half of the year.
