Gyeonggi-do Invests 6.8 Billion Won to Create a Safe Environment

[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province will invest 6.8 billion KRW in the Safe Environment Creation Project. This is an increase of 2.8 billion KRW (70%) compared to last year's 4 billion KRW.

On the 19th, the province announced that it will allocate 6.8 billion KRW for the "2020 Gyeonggi Province Safe Environment Creation Project," which involves improving hazardous areas within residents' living environments and establishing small-scale safety facilities.

This project aims to identify and resolve increasing risk factors in daily life caused by climate change, aging infrastructure, and other issues, thereby creating a stable living environment for residents.

The province will carry out a total of 164 projects to establish safety facilities in areas with a high frequency of accidents within low-income residential areas across 30 cities and counties.

Among the hazardous area improvement projects, the province will support small-scale safety facilities costing less than 100 million KRW that are suitable for the characteristics of each city and county.

Key projects include ▲ creating safety facilities on school routes and in front of schools (such as Yellow Carpets, yellow traffic lights, voice guidance devices), ▲ installing CCTV, ▲ applying special fluorescent materials, ▲ distributing automated external defibrillators, ▲ installing fire hydrants and emergency fire extinguishing devices, ▲ anti-slip pavement, and ▲ installing life-saving boxes.

Previously, the province invested 4 billion KRW last year to carry out 131 safety facility projects such as CCTV installation, anti-slip pavement, and pedestrian environment improvements in 24 cities and counties.

As a result of these efforts, in 2019, Gyeonggi Province achieved the highest grade (Grade 1, Excellent) for five consecutive years in the Regional Safety Index, ranking first nationwide in five out of six categories, was selected as an excellent organization in the 2019 National Safety Inspection, and was recognized as an excellent organization in the 2019 National Safety Education, achieving significant results in safety management.

A provincial official stated, "The reason Gyeonggi Province is evaluated as a safer region compared to other areas is due to the continuous interest of local residents in building safety infrastructure," and added, "We will actively work to identify and resolve risk factors in the living environment to create a safer Gyeonggi Province."
