[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ga-yeon] An active-duty police officer who attempted to sexually assault a woman he met through a blind date has been sentenced to prison in court.
The Criminal Division 13 of Incheon District Court (Presiding Judge Song Seung-hoon) announced on the 18th that Sergeant A (36) of a police station in Incheon, who was indicted without detention on charges of attempted quasi-rape, was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison and was taken into custody in court. The court also ordered Sergeant A to complete 40 hours of a sexual violence treatment program.
The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "The victim's testimony is consistent and credible. There is no special reason to fabricate false information," and added, "Considering Sergeant A's method of crime and the mental shock suffered by the victim, the sentencing was determined."
Sergeant A was previously brought to trial on charges of attempting to sexually assault Ms. B, who was intoxicated, at a motel in Incheon in December 2015.
The two first met through a blind date that same year and had several meetings before the crime was committed, according to the investigation.
Sergeant A claimed that the sexual intercourse was consensual, but the court did not accept this claim.
According to the police, Sergeant A is reportedly planning to appeal the first trial verdict.
