Dongjak-gu Supports Creating a Safe Environment for Elderly Living Alone Changwoo Lee, Mayor of Dongjak District

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongjak-gu (Mayor Lee Chang-woo) will support the creation of a ‘Safe Environment for Elderly Living Alone’ through customized residential environment improvements until December.

The target group consists of elderly living alone households who are basic livelihood security recipients or have a median income below 60%, and whose residential environment is poor.

Details include installation and repair of residential equipment such as ▲insulation materials and insect screens to prepare for severe cold and heat ▲wallpaper and flooring replacement ▲replacement of old boilers, as well as ▲disinfection and pest control ▲support for heating and cooling supplies.

The district will have life support workers from project executing institutions such as Sadang Senior Welfare Center and Dongjak Senior Welfare Center visit households directly by the 28th of this month to identify customized residential environment improvement needs for each elderly person and provide support.

Additionally, each community service center is working hard on welfare projects for vulnerable groups and marginalized neighbors.

In Sindaebang 2-dong, starting from March, a ‘Nutritious Love Porridge’ support project will be conducted by selecting low-income households at risk of nutritional deficiency, including elderly, disabled, and single-person households.

In cooperation with local food service businesses, customized nutritious porridge considering the health status of recipients will be prepared and delivered once or twice a week by members of the local community security council, who will also check on their well-being and living conditions.

Furthermore, ▲Noryangjin 1-dong operates ‘24-hour Smart Safety Keeper’ using the Internet of Things (IoT) and ‘Pet (Ornamental Fish) Support’ ▲Sangdo 1-dong runs ‘Care Plug’ for continuous monitoring using IoT and illuminance sensors and a visiting night welfare counseling center.

Through programs such as ▲Sadang 5-dong’s ‘Safe Village! Disaster Alert’ ▲Daebang-dong’s ‘Our Neighborhood Haha Summer Volunteer Group’ ▲Sangdo 2-dong’s ‘Love Safety Phone’ ▲Sadang 4-dong’s ‘Love Yogurt Delivery,’ efforts are being made to support the health and emotional stability of the elderly.

In addition, projects such as ▲Sadang 2-dong’s 70th and 80th birthday parties for elderly living alone ▲Heukseok-dong’s ‘Love Seasonal Side Dish and Nutritious Porridge Sharing Project’ ▲Sangdo 3-dong’s ‘Happy Mobile Market General Store Chatdong-i’ ▲Sangdo 4-dong’s briquette volunteer work have been promoted.

Lee Hong-yeol, Director of the Elderly and Disabled Division, said, “We will do our best to ensure that no residents are excluded from welfare by promoting customized welfare services by age and class through outreach.”

Last year, the district improved the residential environment of 106 elderly living alone households by installing and repairing insect screens, gas timers, LED bulbs, blinds, and sinks.
