[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has approved the operating license for the first Barakah nuclear power plant unit exported from Korea.
According to foreign media and the nuclear industry on the 17th, the UAE Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR) has approved the operating license for the first unit of the Barakah nuclear power plant, and fuel loading is expected to begin soon. After that, it will undergo a trial operation before entering commercial operation.
The Barakah nuclear power plant project involves constructing four units of the Korean next-generation nuclear reactor 'APR1400' in the Barakah area, located 270 km west of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE. Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) won the contract for this project in December 2009.
The APR1400 has received design certification from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), confirming its safety.
