[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] Hyundai Motor Company is accelerating its transformation into a 'smart mobility solution company' through a 'multi-mobility service' that allows convenient use of various transportation modes via an application.
On the 17th, Hyundai Motor announced that the 'Incheon e-eum' project, conducted in consortium with Incheon City, was finally selected as a main project under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's 'Smart City Challenge.' The Ministry's 'Smart City Challenge' is a project aimed at creating new models by combining private sector creative ideas and local governments' administrative and financial capabilities to solve urban issues such as transportation, environment, and safety.
Last year, the Ministry selected six preliminary project local governments, and after about a year of pilot project performance evaluation, Incheon Metropolitan City, Daejeon Metropolitan City, and Bucheon City were confirmed as the final main project targets.
The Hyundai Motor-Incheon City consortium plans to promote a socially participatory multi-modal mobility service project that integrates existing transportation modes such as subway, bus, and taxi, beyond linking the demand-responsive bus 'I-MOD' and the electric kickboard-based micro-mobility service 'I-ZET,' which have been piloted in Yeongjong International City.
During the main project period, the consortium will further advance the service model demonstrated in Yeongjong International City and expand the service area to public transportation vulnerable zones such as Songdo International City, Namdong National Industrial Complex, and Geomdan New Town. They will also actively seek win-win measures with the taxi and bus industries using regulatory sandboxes.
The know-how and outcomes obtained through this main project will be expanded in cooperation to be applicable to domestic and international smart city pilot cities such as Sejong 5-1 Living Zone and Indonesia.
Jiyoung Jo, President of Hyundai Motor's Strategy and Technology Headquarters, said, "Hyundai Motor will participate in the Smart City Challenge project to provide new-concept smart mobility solutions such as multi-mobility," adding, "We will contribute to making Incheon Metropolitan City a people-centered smart city through sustainable services, not one-off efforts."
Meanwhile, last year Hyundai Motor formed a consortium with Incheon City, Hyundai AutoEver, CL, Yonsei University, and others. After gathering citizens' opinions, they concretized the new-concept mobility solution 'Incheon e-eum.'
Since December last year, the Hyundai Motor-Incheon City consortium has been piloting the demand-responsive bus 'I-MOD' service in Yeongjong International City and operating the micro-mobility service 'I-ZET' using electric kickboards in the Unseo-dong area of Yeongjongdo.
