Seongbuk-gu Elderly-Friendly Customized Housing Management Service Evaluation 'Very Positive'

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Seongbuk-gu (Mayor Lee Seung-ro) held a performance report meeting on the ‘Elderly-Friendly Customized Housing Management Service,’ promoted as part of the 2019 city-district upward and cooperative job project (Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship Dream) on the 12th.

The report meeting was held with the attendance of Lee Seung-ro, Mayor of Seongbuk-gu, Lee In-soon, Chairperson of the Health and Welfare Committee of the Seongbuk-gu Council, along with seven district council members, representatives from universities and private housing welfare organizations, and private company CEOs (advisory committee) operating in architecture, interior design, and home repair businesses.

Seongbuk-gu’s ‘Elderly-Friendly Customized Housing Management Service’ attracted attention as a job and welfare public service model that is the first among local governments nationwide to create youth jobs by training young housing management specialists and proactively respond to a super-aged society by providing services to improve safe housing environments for local households aged 65 and over (households with income below 80% of the median income).

Over the past year, the district operated a youth project team by training 16 customized housing management service specialists in collaboration with universities and advisory companies.

The youth project team selected 52 elderly households in the region and provided over 400 housing management services, including installing safety grab bars in bathrooms, applying anti-slip treatments, installing handrails in living rooms and bedrooms, replacing kitchen faucets, removing door thresholds, replacing LED lighting, installing storage cabinets, adjusting kitchen sink heights, as well as cleaning, organizing and storage, and pest control services.

Mayor Lee Seung-ro said, “I am pleased to present the results of the elderly-customized housing management service, which Seongbuk-gu initiated for the first time, with experts from various fields. We will strive to discover and promote better life-oriented and community-based policies, and hope that this excellent policy case will spread to many other autonomous districts.”

Professor Lee Yeon-sook (Department of Housing Environment, Yonsei University), who participated as an advisory committee member in project operation and curriculum development, stated, “Seongbuk-gu’s attempt to implement the most necessary services timely in the super-aged era has very high social value, and I hope this project model will be widely disseminated to many local governments that are not yet prepared.”

Following 2019, Seongbuk-gu was selected again in 2020 as a continuing project, supporting youth to act as professional housing management planners by enhancing technical capabilities. The youth will also serve as reliable supporters of community care through starting housing management specialized companies.
