Yeongdeungpo-gu Aims for Child-Friendly City Certification Within the Year in Cooperation with Good Neighbors and Others

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Chae Hyun-il) is accelerating the realization of child welfare by establishing a public-private cooperation system through agreements with two international relief and development NGOs to implement a UNICEF Child-Friendly City.

A Child-Friendly City refers to a community that practices the fundamental spirit of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The district aims to establish and implement comprehensive and systematic child policies so that children can enjoy a happy life.

To promote more substantial child policies, the district has signed agreements with Good Neighbors and Save the Children, specialized organizations for child rights advocacy. Both international relief and development NGOs deeply sympathize with the district’s purpose of creating a Child-Friendly City.

On the 14th, the district will sign agreements with the Seoul Southern Branch of Good Neighbors and the Central Branch of Save the Children. Through this, the child rights advocacy organizations will support education and promotional activities to enhance child rights, while the district will provide administrative support such as recruiting residents and offering educational venues.

Furthermore, customized courses for parents, children, teachers, facility workers, and related personnel will be held in the future to participate in the international trend of promoting child welfare.

The district expects that this agreement will solidify the public-private cooperation system for enhancing child rights, including spreading awareness of child rights and expanding child rights education.

Meanwhile, the district aims to obtain Child-Friendly City certification this year. Since enacting related ordinances in 2018, it has steadily pursued efforts toward becoming a Child-Friendly City by joining the Local Government Council for Child-Friendly Cities, forming the Child-Friendly City Promotion Committee and Child Participation Committee, and conducting child status surveys.

Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “By signing agreements with these two international relief and development NGOs, we have taken a step forward toward a more substantial Child-Friendly City,” and added, “We will create an open Yeongdeungpo where children are happy and their rights are respected.”
