Concerns Over COVID-19 Lead to Cancellation of 'Mobile Olympics' MWC (Comprehensive)

[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] The Mobile World Congress (MWC), the largest event in the telecommunications and mobile industry scheduled to be held in Barcelona, Spain from the 24th to the 27th, has been canceled.

On the 12th (local time), John Hoffman, chairman of the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA), the organizer of the event, announced in a statement that "MWC 2020" has been canceled.

He explained the reason for the cancellation as "the international concerns over COVID-19 and travel warnings have made it impossible to hold the event." Since MWC is a large-scale event that gathers more than 100,000 people worldwide, it was difficult to avoid concerns about the spread of COVID-19 infection.

Many companies have already decided not to participate in this MWC. Major information and communication companies such as Intel, Ericsson, Nokia, Cisco, and Vodafone have notified that they will not attend MWC due to concerns about COVID-19. LG Electronics, which planned to unveil a new smartphone, also joined the ranks of non-participants.
