Fusion Historical Romantic Comedy 'Joseon Gungnyeo Yeonmo Jijeong' Opens on the 5th

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The romantic comedy "Joseon Palace Maidens' Love Story" will be performed from the 5th to the 16th at Huam Stage Hall 1 in Daehak-ro.

"Joseon Palace Maidens' Love Story" is a fusion historical romantic comedy that alternates between modern times and the Joseon Dynasty. It humorously depicts the lively chaos that unfolds as a public service worker who has never been in love meets ghosts who have also never experienced love in the mountains and struggles to restore the love of a wandering spirit. The story adds dramatic imagination using "Naesimyo-yeok-gil" on Imalsan Mountain, actually located in Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, as its setting.

Strange accidents continue to occur on Imalsan Myeoyeok-gil in Jingwan-dong, Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul, leading the Eunpyeong District Office to cancel the annual Eunpyeong Walking Festival. When Hyun-ah, who was in charge of the event, falls into a dilemma, Daeyeon, a public service worker interested in Hyun-ah, climbs the Myeoyeok-gil alone to solve her troubles. Daeyeon meets wandering spirits including Yeonhwa, a wandering ghost, as well as palace eunuchs and senior court ladies from the Joseon era, and embarks on a project to resolve their grudges for Hyun-ah.

The ghosts from the Joseon royal palace who have wandered the afterlife for 200 years surprisingly adapt well to the modern era. They procure water using convenience store 1+1 promotions and use appropriate foreign loanwords suited to the global era. Each character, full of unique charm, passionately studies love theories and practices awkward role-playing to help resolve the wandering spirit’s grudge, creating laughter throughout the performance. Meanwhile, tragic love stories from the palace’s past are reenacted as plays within the play, adding further interest.

The play was written and directed by Kim Sung-jin, who is actively working as a director at Geukbaljeonso 301 and as the head of the theater troupe Mongjungjagak. The cast includes Kim Gwak-kyung-hee, Ryu Ji-hoon, Shim Kyu-hyun, Lee Joo-hee, Jang Jin-hee, Lee Han, Jung Mi-ri, and Yoo Won-jin. Staff members include planning PD Im Suk-gyun, assistant director Yoo Myung-jin, lighting by Kim Kwang-hoon, stage design by Yoo Da-mi, composition by Park So-hee, graphic design by Bae Tae-sung, and operator Jeon Jeong-wook. The webtoon-style posters and promotional materials were personally illustrated and designed by actor Ryu Ji-hoon.
