Sacheon City Holds Briefing on Hosting 'Korea's Second Gateway Airport'

"Helping Southern Region Economic Revitalization and National Balanced Development"

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Son Tae-seok] Sacheon City, Gyeongnam, held the 'Republic of Korea 2nd Gateway Airport Namjung Region Attraction Briefing' at the Yeosu Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Yeosu City, Jeonnam, on the 30th.

About 20 people attended the briefing, including secretaries-general and officials from the chambers of commerce of Yeosu, Suncheon, and Gwangyang in Jeonnam, and Jinju and Sacheon in Gyeongnam; the Namhaean Namjung Region Development Council; the Dongseo Creative Forum Sacheon Chairman; and officials from Jinju and Sacheon cities.

Research Professor Lee Won-seop of Gyeongnam National University of Science and Technology said at the briefing, "If the Namjung Region Gateway Airport is attracted, it will be recorded as a case in Korean history where nine local governments from Yeongnam and Honam regions made rational decisions for mutual development without political backgrounds."

He also emphasized, "We must attract large national projects to revitalize the southern economy, promote national balanced development, and drive national competitiveness," adding, "Let's build a new metropolitan economic zone linked with the Namjung Region's natural environment, Yeosu and Gwangyang national industrial complexes, Jinju and Sacheon aviation national industrial complexes, space industry, and MRO business."

Jung Seok-man, Chairman of the Dongseo Creative Forum Sacheon, said, "Five cities in Jeonnam and five cities in Gyeongnam are cooperating to attract the Conference of the Parties to the Climate Change Convention to Yeosu," and added, "Through attracting the 2nd Gateway Airport, let's have civil organizations in the Namjung Region cooperate to promote economic development in the southern region."

Sacheon City plans to request cooperation from the Jeolla and Gyeongsang regions for the work to attract the Namjung Region Gateway Airport and will continuously hold regional meetings and other events to build consensus among civic groups, starting with this briefing.
