Gyeonggi Health and Environment Research Institute Tightens Air Component Measurement Standards

[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province will begin measuring fine dust by region starting next month.

The Gyeonggi-do Institute of Health and Environment announced on the 30th that the installation of 'regional fine dust atmospheric component monitoring stations,' which has been underway for over three years as part of fine dust reduction efforts, has been completed and will enter normal operation starting next month.

The Institute installed atmospheric component monitoring stations in Pyeongtaek and Pocheon in 2018, and additionally set up stations in Icheon and Gimpo in the second half of last year.

Going forward, the atmospheric component monitoring stations will utilize state-of-the-art automatic and manual equipment such as fine dust samplers, automatic heavy metal analyzers, and automatic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) analyzers to analyze over 100 components including fine dust, heavy metals, and ozone precursors. This data will be used to produce improvement plans necessary for fine dust reduction measures that residents can directly feel.

Yoon Mi-hye, director of the Institute of Health and Environment, stated, "Although the annual average concentration of fine dust in Gyeonggi Province is decreasing, the number of high concentration days is increasing every year. We will do our best to establish groundbreaking measures that residents can feel, based on clear cause analysis from the atmospheric component monitoring stations, rather than formal reduction measures, to create a comfortable environment where residents can breathe easily."
