[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The National Institute of Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, together with the Korean Standards Association, will hold the 2020 New Year Greeting Meeting for standard-related organizations on the 30th at EL Tower in Seoul to explain this year's policy directions related to industrial standards.

The National Institute of Technology and Standards has secured a budget of 145.3 billion KRW for this year, a 39% increase from last year's 104.8 billion KRW. This will be focused on standard development projects supporting industrial policies such as new industries.

This year, the institute's key standardization promotion areas are the three major new industries identified by the government: semiconductors, bio, and future cars, as well as the three major technologies related to the 4th Industrial Revolution: data, networks, and artificial intelligence (AI).

Standard policies for self-reliance in materials, parts, and equipment, linked to Japan's export regulations, and related activities in safety, certification, and responses to various countries' technical regulations will also be pursued with specific goals.

Specifically, 12 billion KRW will be invested in new R&D projects for developing standard materials essential to the materials industry, and 23.5 billion KRW will be allocated to securing safety for secondary batteries and energy storage systems (ESS).

A budget of 4.3 billion KRW has been set for developing certification technologies for new products integrating the regulatory sandbox (regulatory special permission) system.

On this day, the institute will select 15 outstanding standard development cases from last year that contributed to improving the quality of life for citizens and corporate competitiveness, awarding the National Institute of Technology and Standards Director's Commendation.

Mr. Shin Hyunjae of Indy System and Mr. Lim Sangsik of the Korea Gas Safety Corporation will receive the Director's Commendation for developing the standard "Defect Inspection Method for Polyethylene Material Gas Pipe Connections" (Standard Number ISO/TS 16943), which opened the way for foreign exports of inspection equipment from domestic small and medium enterprises.

Mr. Jo Seongguk of the Korea Precision Chemical Promotion Association will also be commended for developing the standard "Power and Data Compatibility of Micro Fuel Cell Systems" (IEC 62282-6-400), which sets methods and criteria for miniaturizing hydrogen fuel cell technology for laptops, mobile phones, and other devices.

About 100 people, including more than 20 recipients of the Director's Commendation and officials from standard-related organizations, are expected to attend the New Year Greeting Meeting.

Lee Seungwoo, Director of the National Institute of Technology and Standards, said, "To respond to the major change of industrial convergence, our standard industry must shift from individual standardization activities to a new approach that views them at the entire system level. If all related organizations work together, we can develop new international competitiveness."
