Transformation of Gukhoe-daero into a Park with Forest, Plaza, and Community Spaces
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Gangseo-gu, Seoul (Mayor Noh Hyun-song) is exhibiting the winning design of the design competition for the National Assembly-daero Upper Park Project at the Gomdallae Cultural Welfare Center.
The district is holding this exhibition to give residents a preview of the newly transformed National Assembly-daero, which will be completed in the second half of 2023.
Interested residents can visit the Gomdallae Welfare Center (Kkachisan Station) by the 31st to experience the future changes.
The National Assembly-daero Upper Park Project involves undergrounding the 7.6 km-long National Assembly-daero, which connects Sinwol IC and the National Assembly Intersection, and creating a large linear park on top where forests, plazas, and community facilities coexist.
The park area is approximately 110,000㎡ (40~55m wide), a large-scale park eight times the size of Seoul Plaza in front of City Hall.
The park is scheduled to open in the second half of 2023. The winning entry, "Jeokgu Changsin" (跡舊創新), by Citopos Co., Ltd. and four other companies, was selected as the final winner in the international design competition held by Seoul City to develop a creative and high-quality master plan.
The winning design "Jeokgu Changsin" means creating a new future from old memories and traces.
National Assembly-daero, Korea’s first highway opened in 1968, has been remembered for 50 years as a space of gray asphalt and noise. The project aims to transform it into a "Millennium Forest," a people- and nature-centered space where diverse cultures and play take place.
To realize this, the park is composed of nine distinctive spaces. The "Great Field," where residents can rest and exercise, will also host performances and events.
"Kids Farm Village" allows children to grow flowers and vegetables themselves. Additionally, a large waterside area called the "Water Garden," a "Winter Garden" planted with species that can grow in winter, and a "Community Center" for residents’ relaxation will be created.
Other facilities include the "Clean Air Pavilion" for small weddings, the "Gyeongin Underpass Plaza" for various cultural events, and the "Co-working Plaza" for meetings and work purposes.
A district official said, "We are holding this exhibition to show residents, who first think of noise and dust when they hear National Assembly-daero, the future transformed appearance of the area. We hope many interested residents will participate."
