7.7 Magnitude Earthquake in Jamaica Sea... Damage Scale Unknown

[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] A magnitude 7.7 earthquake occurred at 2:10 PM local time on the 28th in the sea between Jamaica and Cuba. The extent of the damage is not yet known.


According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of the earthquake was located 125 km northwest of Lucea, a coastal city in Jamaica. The focal depth was 10 km.


ABC News reported that there were strong tremors in Santiago, a city in eastern Cuba. Local residents said aftershocks are still continuing, but it is not known whether there is serious damage, the broadcast reported.


USGS initially announced the earthquake magnitude as 7.3 but later upgraded it. Due to the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued for Jamaica, Cuba, and the Cayman Islands near the epicenter.
