[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dong-hyun] The Hong Kong government has decided to suspend train services between mainland China and Hong Kong to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (Wuhan pneumonia) within Hong Kong.

On the 28th (local time), according to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), Carrie Lam (Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor), the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, held a press conference and announced measures to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus by significantly reducing public transportation services between Hong Kong and mainland China.

Under these measures, which will take effect from the 30th, direct train services on two routes, including the line between Hong Kong Hung Hom and Guangzhou, will be suspended. Additionally, the number of flights between Hong Kong and mainland China will be reduced by half, and tourist bus operations will also be cut back.

The Hong Kong authorities have also decided to refuse entry to individual travelers from mainland China. Passenger ferry services between the two sides will also be suspended.

The SCMP reported that the central government of China has agreed to suspend the issuance of individual travel visas for mainland Chinese traveling to Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, as of now, more than 4,500 people in mainland China have been confirmed infected with the novel coronavirus, with 106 deaths. In Hong Kong, there have been 8 confirmed cases.
