On the 28th, Candidate Jo visited the site of the excavation of remains at the old Gwangju Prison and said, "This year, marking the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Movement, the anguished cries of the May spirits have finally been illuminated by the light of truth," adding, "With the official launch of the May 18 Democratic Movement Truth Investigation Committee, thorough fact-finding without any suspicion and punishment of those responsible must be achieved, starting with the excavation of remains at the old Gwangju Prison."
He continued, "The site of the old Gwangju Prison mass grave, where dozens of remains were recently discovered, is considered a major secret burial site of May 18 missing persons, according to testimonies from martial law troops, prison staff, and inmates at the time," and said, "Administrative and financial support should not be spared to ensure that this historic excavation work to uncover the truth of May 1980 proceeds without any setbacks."
He added, "Active public promotion is also necessary to encourage additional reports of May 18 missing persons and to secure the DNA of their families," emphasizing, "With the official launch of the May 18 Truth Investigation Committee, full efforts must be devoted to the excavation of remains at Gwangju Prison before the construction of Solomon Park begins."
