Gwanak-gu Provides Nationwide First Wandering Detection Devices for Women with Intellectual Disabilities

January 28 to February 7 Registration... For Women with Intellectual Disabilities or Female Adolescents with Borderline Intelligence... Gwanak, a Women-Friendly City, Contributes to Creating a Safe City for All

Gwanak-gu Provides Nationwide First Wandering Detection Devices for Women with Intellectual Disabilities

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gwanak-gu (Mayor Park Jun-hee) will support wandering detectors for women with intellectual disabilities for the first time nationwide to create a safe living environment for women with disabilities.

The wandering detector is a device equipped with a GPS tracker. When the subject carries the device in the form of a wristwatch, the guardian can check the real-time location of the protected person through a smartphone app.

It also has a function to send an alarm to the guardian's smartphone if the subject leaves a set area (safe zone), which has the advantage of enabling early response to exposure to serious crimes in case of missing incidents.

The district expects that through the wandering detector service, it will be possible to expand the living range of people with disabilities who have restrictions in daily life and social activities and strengthen the support system to ensure their safety.

Currently, various institutions such as the National Health Insurance Service, local government dementia safety centers, and police agencies provide wandering detectors as public services, but Gwanak-gu is the first institution nationwide to provide them specifically for women with intellectual disabilities.

Applications can be made from January 28 to February 7 at the local resident center or the Women's and Family Division on the 3rd floor of the district office. Eligible applicants are women with intellectual disabilities (aged 12 to 39) or female adolescents with borderline intelligence (aged 12 to 18) residing in the area.

Support recipients will be fairly selected based on various criteria such as type of disability, living conditions, and age, and device distribution and usage training will be conducted on February 26.

In addition, Gwanak-gu, newly designated as a women-friendly city in 2020, will actively promote 14 women-friendly policies centered on five major goals over the next five years: ▲ gender equality in the local community ▲ expansion of women's economic and social participation ▲ enhancement of community safety ▲ creation of a family-friendly environment ▲ strengthening women's capacity for community activities.

Mayor Park Jun-hee said, “Starting with the support project for wandering detectors for women with intellectual disabilities, we will carry out various projects befitting a women-friendly city,” and added, “We will create a safer and happier Gwanak-gu together with women and all residents.”
