Seoul City Promotes Customized Home Repairs for People with Severe Disabilities

Apply at the Community Service Center by the 28th of next month

[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] The Seoul Metropolitan Government is launching customized home renovation projects tailored for people with disabilities, focusing on bathrooms, bedrooms, and entrances.

On the 28th, Seoul announced that it will promote a customized home renovation project aimed at households with severe disabilities to resolve inconveniences caused by housing structures designed for non-disabled individuals.

The core of this renovation project involves remodeling bathrooms, bedrooms, entrances, kitchens, access routes, and living rooms in homes where people with severe disabilities reside. A Seoul city official emphasized, "The home renovation project has shown a high satisfaction rate of 96.5%."

The renovation targets are, in principle, households receiving basic living subsidies or near-poverty disabled households (with a median income below 50%) where the head of the household or household members have severe disabilities, living in either owner-occupied or rental housing. Starting this year, households with a median income between 50% and 60% will also be newly included as eligible for support, provided they cover 30% of the renovation costs themselves, thereby expanding the program.

Disabled households wishing to apply for the renovation can submit their applications to the local community service center by the 28th of next month. After on-site inspections and evaluations, construction companies will carry out the renovation work.

Jinwoo Jeong, Director of Welfare Planning at Seoul City, stated, "We hope many low-income households with severe disabilities will participate in Seoul's home renovation project so that vulnerable groups with severe disabilities no longer experience inconveniences in their living environments. We will continue to expand and implement this renovation project."
