Second Half Release Expected, but Q2 Launch Rumored
'S Pen' Support, 8-Inch Display, Released as 5G Model"
Long-Term Note Series Consolidation... Possible to Fill the Gap
[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] It is anticipated that Samsung Electronics will release the true successor to the Galaxy Fold and its third foldable phone in the second quarter. The internal display is expected to be up to 8 inches and will also support the S Pen.
According to industry sources on the 27th, Samsung Electronics plans to launch two foldable phones this year. Following the 'Galaxy Z Flip' released in February, the Galaxy Fold 2 or Galaxy Z Fold is expected to be unveiled as early as the second quarter.
IT expert and Twitter user Max Weinbach stated, "Samsung will release the successor to the Galaxy Fold in the second quarter," adding, "It will be a 5G model featuring an 8-inch display, a 108-megapixel camera, ultra-thin glass, and an S Pen."
The internal display size of the third foldable phone is reported to be 8 inches, which is interpreted as an intention to adopt a ratio suitable for watching videos or using apps on a split screen. The Galaxy Fold’s internal display was 7.3 inches, and the external display was 4.6 inches. Although information about the foldable phone’s external display has not been disclosed, it is expected to be improved to enhance usability. To increase the durability of the display, which was a controversy at the time of the Galaxy Fold’s release, it is highly likely that the same 'ultra-thin glass' used in the Galaxy Z Flip will be applied.
Another notable point is that the successor to the Galaxy Fold will support the 'S Pen,' which was previously only available on the Galaxy Note series. It remains to be seen whether it will be the same S Pen as the Galaxy Note10 or a new S Pen designed for a new Note series. Incorporating the Note series’ signature S Pen into other products increases the possibility of consolidating the Note series. In the long term, there is a possibility that the Note series will be replaced by foldable phones or integrated by supporting the S Pen on the Galaxy S series, thereby expanding the foldable phone market share.
IT media outlet PhoneArena explained, "Samsung may be planning to discontinue the Galaxy Note series," adding, "The gap left by the Galaxy Note could be filled by foldable phones." They further stated, "While Samsung is not expected to discontinue the Note series this year, the features of upcoming products suggest that they are preparing for the integration of the Note and foldable lines."
The main camera on the third foldable phone is expected to be the same 108-megapixel sensor as the Galaxy S20 Ultra. It is also anticipated to include a 48-megapixel telephoto lens supporting 5x optical zoom and 30x lossless zoom, as well as a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens. The front camera is expected to be 40 megapixels. With the expansion of 5G network coverage, the successor will also be released as a 5G model like the Galaxy Fold, and is expected to be equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 chipset.
