[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Samsung Electronics announced on the 27th that Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong continued his global on-site management by visiting Latin America during this Lunar New Year holiday period.
On the day, Vice Chairman Lee visited Samsung Electronics' Manaus subsidiary located in Amazonas state in northern Brazil, toured the production line, and encouraged employees working during the holiday.
On the 28th, he plans to visit the S?o Paulo subsidiary, which oversees Latin American operations, to review local business strategies and also visit the Campinas factory that produces smartphones.
Vice Chairman Lee emphasized, "The power to turn crises into opportunities comes from relentless challenges and innovation," adding, "Let us write the 100-year history of Samsung together with the pioneering spirit that dares to take bold challenges."
He further added, "The sweat shed today in this distant foreign land will become the nourishment for pioneering a new future."
The Manaus and Campinas factories visited by Vice Chairman Lee serve as pivotal production bases supplying smartphones, TVs, and home appliances to the Latin American market. Currently, about 7,000 employees work there.
Manaus is the capital of Amazonas state in northern Brazil and was designated in 1967 as the only free trade zone in Brazil, hosting about 500 companies and serving as the industrial hub of northern Brazil.
Manaus is located in a tropical rainforest area that takes more than four hours by air from S?o Paulo, with very harsh living and industrial environments; however, an industrial complex was formed due to the Brazilian government's active factory attraction policies.
Samsung Electronics established the Manaus subsidiary in 1995 and began TV production; currently, it produces TVs, monitors, smartphones, tablets, air conditioners, and other products.
Additionally, Samsung Electronics holds an overwhelming number one position in the Latin American smartphone and TV markets and operates a Brazilian research center and the Samsung Design Latin America in S?o Paulo to develop products specialized for Latin American consumers.
On this business trip, Han Jong-hee, President of Samsung Electronics' Visual Display Business Division, Noh Tae-moon, the newly appointed President of Samsung Electronics' Mobile Communications Business Division, who are responsible for finished products such as TVs and smartphones, and Jang Si-ho, Vice President and Head of Samsung Electronics' Global Technology Center, accompanied him.
Meanwhile, Vice Chairman Lee has mainly conducted ▲encouragement of overseas on-site employees ▲local business inspections ▲business meetings with global company CEOs during holiday periods such as Lunar New Year and Chuseok, and his 'holiday on-site management' has become regularized.
Last Lunar New Year, he visited the construction site of the second phase of the semiconductor factory in Xi'an, China, and during Chuseok, he visited the Riyadh city subway construction site in Saudi Arabia to encourage employees.
