Hwang Chang-gyu Visits Davos: "5G and AI Innovative Technologies Contribute to Human Prosperity"


[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] Hwang Chang-gyu, Chairman of KT, who visited Davos, Switzerland, stated that “next-generation innovative technologies such as 5G and AI (Artificial Intelligence) will contribute to human prosperity.”


According to KT, Chairman Hwang attended a panel session titled ‘Investing in the Next Digital Frontier’ at the 2020 World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting (Davos Forum) held in Davos until the 24th. During the session, Chairman Hwang introduced ▲KT’s 5G application cases (B2B Use Case) ▲the ‘importance of cooperation’ among ICT companies. The Davos Forum is a gathering of global political and business leaders to discuss pressing global issues.


At this event, Chairman Hwang introduced various 5G application cases created by KT across different industries, emphasizing that digital transformation of industries through 5G is being realized. He introduced smart factory and smart shipyard cases jointly established by KT and Hyundai Heavy Industries Group to innovate South Korea’s manufacturing industry. He also announced the collaboration case of the world’s first ‘5G Smart Innovation Hospital’ applying 5G to medical work in partnership with Samsung Seoul Hospital.


At this event, Chairman Hwang emphasized the important role of global ICT leaders to realize the ‘stakeholder capitalism’ proposed by Klaus Schwab, Chairman of WEF, and introduced KT’s social contribution project ‘Giga Story.’ Giga Story is KT’s unique contribution activity operated to resolve regional imbalances by providing network infrastructure and ICT solutions to remote mountainous areas. KT operates the Giga Story project not only domestically but also in developing countries such as Bangladesh, Cambodia, UAE, and Nepal.


Along with this, he discussed with panelists including Antonio Neri, CEO of Hewlett-Packard, about inclusive global digital economic innovation measures, changes in industry and consumer paradigms through 5G and next-generation innovative technologies, and the roles of companies and governments for digital infrastructure innovation.


Chairman Hwang has attended the Davos Forum for three consecutive years since 2018. In 2018, he proposed the ‘Global Epidemic Prevention Platform (GEPP).’ GEPP is a platform that uses telecommunications big data technology to provide traveler movement routes and epidemic information to health authorities and individuals. In 2019, he argued that ‘5G will be a core infrastructure for realizing the Fourth Industrial Revolution’ and declared that KT would take the lead in the world’s first commercialization of 5G.
