Korea South-East Power "Traditional Market LED Lighting Replacement... 300t Greenhouse Gas Reduction"

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] Korea South-East Power Co. is implementing a greenhouse gas reduction project by replacing LED lighting in traditional markets.

On the 22nd, Korea South-East Power held a completion ceremony for the 'Traditional Market Greenhouse Gas Reduction Project' at Jungang Market in Jinju, Gyeongnam, attended by about 80 people including Yu Hyang-yeol, President of Korea South-East Power, Cho Gyu-il, Mayor of Jinju, and Kim Chang-seop, Chairman of the Korea Energy Agency.

In this project, South-East Power fully supported the cost of replacing 339 LED lights in the public parking lot of Jinju Jungang Market. The Korea Energy Agency provided support for energy diagnosis and project registration, while Jinju City was responsible for recommending project sites and administrative support. The Gyeongnam Community Chest of Korea participated as the project executing agency.

South-East Power expects an energy saving effect of 620 MWh over the next five years from this project. An electricity bill reduction effect worth approximately 62 million KRW is anticipated. Replacing existing fluorescent lamps with LED lights is also expected to reduce about 300 tons of greenhouse gases. This is analyzed to have the same effect as creating a pine tree carbon offset forest of about 47,000 trees.

This project was promoted as part of the 'Business Agreement for Greenhouse Gas Reduction and Eco-friendly Energy Transition' signed between Korea South-East Power and the Korea Energy Agency in September last year, and it is the first case in Korea of a traditional market greenhouse gas reduction project linked to emission permits.

Yu Hyang-yeol, President of Korea South-East Power, said, "We will do our best to successfully complete the registration of the country's first traditional market program reduction project through smooth cooperation with related organizations in the future, and to make it a representative exemplary project capable of simultaneous energy and greenhouse gas reduction by expanding the project nationwide.”
