[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] The Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission announced on the 22nd that it will install odor reduction facilities at the public sewage treatment plant near Yongchon-ri village, Toseong-myeon, Goseong-gun, Gangwon-do. It is expected that the inconvenience in residents' daily lives will be reduced.
The Commission stated that it held an on-site mediation meeting at the Goseong-gun Office in Gangwon-do with residents of Yongchon-ri village and related organizations in attendance.
They prepared a mediation plan to resolve collective complaints by operating an odor alarm system at the public sewage treatment plant to reduce odors and establishing a basic plan to convert the surrounding area into a park.
Residents have experienced inconvenience since the public sewage treatment plant was installed in July 2013. Recently, as Goseong-gun pushed for the expansion of the public sewage treatment plant, residents who feared the odor would worsen filed a grievance complaint with the Commission in October last year.
According to the final mediation plan prepared by the Commission, an odor alarm system will be installed and operated as an odor prevention measure for both the existing and expanded public sewage treatment plants.
Water quality tests of sewage treatment will be conducted once a month in consultation with residents to take measures to prevent odors.
Protection measures have also been established to immediately compensate residents for property damage caused by facility construction. It was decided not to expand the plant after the project implementation to reduce environmental damage concerns.
As an environmental improvement project, a basic plan to convert the area around the public sewage treatment plant into a park will be established and implemented.
After a feasibility study, the plan is expected to include the creation of various sports facilities, bicycle paths, walking trails, and other convenience facilities.
Not only Goseong-gun but also military units will actively participate and take measures such as dismantling unused guard posts and fences through certain procedures.
During the preparation of countermeasures, consultations with residents on each issue will be conducted. Projects that have completed consultations will be actively promoted and completed as soon as possible.
Kim Tae-eung, a standing commissioner of the Commission, said, "Public sewage treatment plants are public facilities necessary for many residents, but efforts are needed to listen to and resolve the difficulties of nearby residents." He added, "We will actively resolve grievance complaints through communication and cooperation among related organizations to alleviate the complaints of citizens inconvenienced by public facilities in the future."
