Operation of the '365 Check-in Responsibility System' in Dong-gu, Gwangju

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Im Taek) announced on the 22nd that it will operate the ‘365 Check-in Responsibility System,’ a new elderly care system where neighbors check on and care for each other, to prevent solitary deaths among elderly living alone.

Dong-gu provides solitary elderly death prevention services through collaboration among related organizations, the Dong Welfare Center, and the district office to ensure that the emergency alert service, one of the care services for elderly living alone and severely disabled persons, operates more safely and efficiently.

The emergency alert service agencies plan to manage device malfunctions and safety alert services more meticulously during the Lunar New Year holiday period.

The Dong Welfare Center designates nearby neighbors or community leaders as check-in responsibility officers to operate the 365 Check-in Responsibility System, confirming well-being not only during the Lunar New Year holidays but also on Saturdays and public holidays.

In particular, Dong-gu forms care groups of 600 sets of ‘Baekse Friends’ (centenarian friends), each group consisting of three elderly individuals, and plans to make every effort to create a warm and prosperous Dong-gu where even elderly people who do not receive elderly care services in 2020 are cared for by neighbors through discovering a public-private-academic cooperation model.

Im Taek, Mayor of Dong-gu, said, “We expect that the ‘365 Safety Responsibility System,’ which advances beyond the existing care system relying on emergency alert services for elderly living alone, where neighbors serve and care with interest and love, will be the starting point for creating a warm and happy Dong-gu community.”
