Simultaneous Reduction of Sulfur and Nitrogen Oxides with a Single Scrubber... New Marine and Fisheries Technology Certified

[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] A technology that simultaneously reduces sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides in ship exhaust gases with a single scrubber has been certified as a New Excellent Technology (NET) in the marine and fisheries sector.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on the 22nd that out of 32 marine and fisheries technologies applied for in the second half of 2019, 11 technologies including this one were certified as New Excellent Technologies.

The New Excellent Technology certification system in the marine and fisheries sector is designed to discover new technologies and certify their excellence. It was introduced in the second half of 2017 to promote the commercialization of new technologies and the market entry of products applying these new technologies.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries conducted a first evaluation assessing novelty, technicality, industrial applicability, and public interest; a second evaluation verifying performance and effectiveness on site; and a third evaluation to finalize the certification of new technologies. Through this process, 11 new marine and fisheries technologies were finally certified.

The technologies certified as new include ▲prefabricated underwater concrete mattress manufacturing technology ▲artificial neural network-based rapid storm surge response prediction technology ▲artificial intelligence video analysis-based port mooring and unmooring monitoring technology, among others.

Regarding the 'simultaneous reduction technology for sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides,' the Ministry expects it to attract the interest of shipping companies aiming to install scrubbers on ships in response to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) environmental regulations. Since this equipment allows the use of existing high-sulfur bunker C fuel, it broadens shipowners' choices by reducing the cost of ship fuel supply.

Companies certified with marine and fisheries new excellent technologies can receive additional points when applying for research and development projects conducted by the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries. Furthermore, new technologies related to construction can be preferentially applied to marine and fisheries construction projects or receive opportunities for trial construction.

Kim Jae-cheol, Director of Marine Industry Policy at the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, said, "We hope the New Excellent Technology certification system will help small and medium-sized enterprises with excellent technologies enter the market and contribute to job creation in related industries." He added, "We plan to prepare support measures so that certified new technologies can be actively utilized in the market."

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries certifies new excellent technologies twice a year (first and second half). Companies wishing to be certified can apply through the Marine and Fisheries Technology Evaluation System website.
