Seongdong-gu Sageun-dong Urban Regeneration Activation Plan Establishment Service Kick-off Meeting Held, Future Vision Presented... Promoting 'Village Hotel Specialized City' with Basic Infrastructure Development Including Low-rise Residential Area Improvement
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Sageun-dong in Seongdong-gu is being developed into a 'Village Hotel Specialized City' through an urban regeneration project.
Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jeong Wono) held the 'Sageun Urban Regeneration Activation Plan Establishment Service Kick-off Meeting' on the 15th, announcing the full-scale promotion of the Sageun urban regeneration project.
The 'Sageun Urban Regeneration Activation Project' is a project carried out in the area around 212-1 Sageun-dong (approximately 100,000㎡), which has poor residential conditions such as many old buildings and narrow alleys where vehicle traffic is impossible. It was finally selected as a 'Seoul Urban Regeneration Activation Area' in April last year.
The project will establish an activation plan by December through basic status surveys, local resource discovery, and resident briefings, and will promote the urban regeneration project by investing a total of 10 billion KRW by 2024.
At this kick-off meeting, the main contents and vision of the future urban regeneration project reflecting the regional characteristics of Sageun-dong were shared.
Sageun-dong is an area mostly composed of low-rise buildings over 20 years old, with rare views of Cheonggyecheon and Jungnangcheon nearby, and is close to the transportation hub Wangsimni Station.
It also forms a regional culture where youth and residents coexist, serving as a residential area for Hanyang University students.
Accordingly, the district announced plans to create a 'Village Hotel Specialized City' made by residents and youth together. The old low-rise houses will be improved into unique lodging facilities linked with the Home Improvement Project, and smart real-time room checking and reservation services using Internet of Things (IoT) technology will be implemented. Basic infrastructure such as surrounding convenience facilities, road expansion, and shared space creation will be established, and a resident council will operate the village hotel independently, contributing to job creation for youth and residents through hotelier training.
The plan is for the entire village to become one hotel, achieving both residential environment improvement and local economic revitalization.
Future progress and details will be decided through resident consultations and participation centered on the resident group 'Sageundamjaengi.' A resident research group 'Living Lab,' mainly composed of Hanyang University students and residents, will be established, and resident briefings and participation programs will be operated.
Jeong Wono, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, stated, "Sageun-dong will be built into a 'Smart Village Hotel Theme Specialized City' where tourists are provided with unique lodging facilities, surrounding commercial districts are revitalized, and livelihood-type building owners are guaranteed rental income, creating a prosperous environment for all." He added, "Based on the various project contents derived from this kick-off meeting, we will do our best to make Sageun-dong a happy village where youth and residents live well together."
