[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yukbong] Choi Kyunghwan, leader of the Alternative New Party, met with the chairman and standing members of the 5·18 Truth Commission, which was launched at the end of last year, and urged them to "do their best for a thorough fact-finding investigation."
On the 21st, at a meeting with Song Seontae, chairman of the 5·18 Truth Commission, Ahn Jongcheol, vice chairman, and Lee Jonghyup, standing member, Choi said, "It is a special feeling that the investigation committee was launched two and a half years after the enactment of the 5·18 Truth Commission Special Act," adding, "The committee must do its best to uncover the truth that has been distorted or concealed for 40 years to prevent further national division and contribute to national unity."
Song Seontae, chairman of the Truth Investigation Committee, expressed gratitude, saying, "Thank you to Leader Choi Kyunghwan for proposing the Special Act and making efforts to launch the investigation committee," and requested continuous support from the National Assembly for the future fact-finding process.
In response, Leader Choi said, "Since the Gwangju lawmakers affiliated with the Alternative New Party have been at the forefront of revealing the truth about 5·18, we will cooperate and support to the fullest extent," adding, "As this is the last chance, a thorough investigation must be conducted to produce a properly certified national report."
Choi Kyunghwan, a 5·18 Democratic Meritorious Person and party leader, originally proposed the 'Special Act for the Truth Investigation of the May 18 Democratic Movement' in 2017 with the signatures of 88 lawmakers from both ruling and opposition parties, and took the lead in ensuring the launch of the investigation committee during the delay period.
