[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Kyung-pil] Wando County, Jeonnam, announced on the 21st that it has achieved an economic ripple effect of approximately 800 billion KRW by attracting coastal fishing fleets over the past five years.

Since 2015, the county has held meetings with fleet owners to attract coastal fishing fleets operating in nearby waters to Wando Port as part of its coastal fleet attraction policy, actively collecting difficulties and suggestions.

Accordingly, to ensure that fishing fleets using Wando Port do not experience inconvenience, fuel is supplied even on weekends, and drinking water, ice, and port handling fees are supported.

Meanwhile, the county has judged that Wando Port has limitations in attracting fishing fleets due to a lack of available berths when fleets enter the port, and to address this issue, it has reflected the expansion of berthing facilities in the 4th National Port Basic Plan.

The county plans to purchase the old Coast Guard pier following the relocation of the Coast Guard pier and utilize it as a dedicated pier for fishing fleets.

Additionally, support facilities for attracting fishing fleets (cold storage warehouses, processing plants, handling and sorting facilities, ice-making plants) are being prepared to be organized by 2021.

Shin Woo-cheol, Wando County Governor, said, “Since the economic ripple effect on the local economy is considerable when external fleets operating in the Wando coastal area enter Wando Port, we are creating a dedicated pier for fishing fleets and expanding support facilities starting this year to allow more external fishing fleets to enter Wando Port. We will attract more coastal fishing fleets to revitalize the local economy.”
