Seoul Jung-gu Holds Neighborhood Resident Meeting to Realize Community Governance

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jung-gu, Seoul (Mayor Seoyangho) will hold resident meetings by touring 15 neighborhoods in celebration of the Year of the Rat 2020.

The resident meetings are occasions prepared to introduce the New Year's district policy directions to residents, share neighborhood issues, and gather diverse resident opinions.

In particular, this year's resident meetings have separately prepared time for visiting key local sites directly related to residents' daily lives, as the district's goal for 2020 is declared as "Realizing a Living District for Jung-gu Residents."

Accordingly, Mayor Seoyangho of Jung-gu focuses on sharing major tasks with residents at neighborhood community centers, engaging in dialogue, and then entering the living district sites to listen closely to vivid public opinions.

At the first meeting held on the afternoon of the 20th in Jungnim-dong, Mayor Seo stated, "In 2020, we will focus on solving issues closely related to residents' lives such as education, welfare, and public services, which are of highest interest to you, to make a year where changes in daily life can be felt," and then headed to Son Gijeong Sports Park, where redevelopment is underway.

He toured the children's library, running center, and open library within the park with residents, discussed operational directions, and attentively listened to on-site complaints.

Additionally, he visited the Jung-gu Modeun Ai Jungnim Center, an out-of-school elementary care center that began operation at the end of last month, encouraged the staff, and then stopped by Hobak Village in the area of Jungnim-dong 173 to check the progress of the urban environment improvement project and plan future steps.

The following resident meeting will be held on the afternoon of the 21st in Yaksu-dong, where after official events such as major task reports and conversations with residents, key site visits will take place.

In Yaksu-dong, especially, three sites where projects decided directly by residents through the 2020 neighborhood government budget assembly will be toured.

The first stop is the installation section of an elevator near Dongho Senior Citizens' Center to improve the walking environment for the elderly. This area is a highland where many elderly residents live, and there had been many complaints requesting elevator installation to replace steep stairs. Last year, the district granted budget allocation authority to the neighborhood community center, and this project was decided through residents' proposals and participation.

Next are the locations for replacing the deteriorated pavement blocks from the Youth Training Center to Namsan Town Daycare Center, and the installation site of a speedometer to induce slow driving for securing pedestrian safety of commuting children from Namsan Town Daycare Center to Dongho Elementary School.

Mayor Seo plans to urge officials to pay more meticulous attention since these projects were decided by residents and emphasize that active resident participation is the root of transforming the village.

Starting from Jungnim-dong on the 20th, the resident meetings will tour 15 neighborhoods in Jung-gu and conclude on February 7 in Sindang-dong.

The district will strive to have various residents attend, including block leaders, heads of functional organizations, housewives, youth, and daycare teachers, to collect diverse opinions.

Furthermore, department heads of the district office will also attend the resident meetings to comprehensively reflect residents' thoughts in district administration.
