[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Seulgi Kim] K League Ulsan Hyundai has signed goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo (29).
On the 20th, K League (Division 1) Ulsan Hyundai announced, "Jo Hyeon-woo, the best goalkeeper in the K League and a hero of the Russia World Cup, has completed 4 weeks of military training and signed a contract with Ulsan. He is starting anew."
Jo Hyeon-woo became a free agent (FA) after his contract with Daegu FC expired at the end of last season. He enlisted for military training at the end of December last year.
Jo Hyeon-woo said, "I am happy to join Ulsan. I heard the team's goal this year is to win the championship. Although Ulsan narrowly missed the title last season, I will do my best to help achieve the championship goal this year."
He added, "I also want to express my gratitude to the Daegu fans who have supported me so far," bidding farewell to his former club Daegu FC's supporters.
Jo Hyeon-woo debuted with Daegu FC in 2013 and played a total of 210 matches over 7 seasons. Since Daegu was a weaker team often in the lower ranks, he conceded a total of 259 goals.
Having been part of the Under-20 (U-20) and Under-23 (U-23) national teams, he began to gain recognition after making impressive saves in a friendly match against Serbia in October 2017.
Jo Hyeon-woo started all three group stage matches in the 2018 Russia World Cup. In particular, his brilliant saves contributed to the 2-0 victory in the last group match against Germany.
In the same year, Jo Hyeon-woo also participated as a wildcard (over 24 years old) in the Jakarta Palembang Asian Games and won a gold medal.
Ulsan has been able to fill the gap left by Kim Seung-gyu, who returned to the Japanese J League, with Jo Hyeon-woo.
